Yesterday as I was starting to prepare this message, the doorbell rang and I ran downstairs to find a woman from Africa, carrying a large suitcase, speaking French, insisting on something that I could barely interpret. I gathered that she was Mennonite; perhaps that is why she appeared at Menno House . After a half hour of trying to piece together what she wanted, I found among her things some handwritten pages of information, including a phone number for a case worker . She had been separated from her children, who were in foster care, and the case worker told me to tell her to call back on Monday, when their offices were open . The woman said her phone was broken . Eventually, I left her on the bench outside Menno House and went inside, where two visiting German pastors wanted to know how to get to the Mennonite church in the Bronx and what time the services starte...
